Mining Sirdar (Selection Grade-I)
1. Mine Legislation, Safety & Regulations (Core Focus):
i. The Mines Act, 1952: Relevant sections concerning health, safety, welfare, working hours, and the duties/responsibilities of competent persons, officials (including Sirdars/Overmen), and workmen.
ii. Coal Mines Regulations (CMR), 2017 (or Metalliferous Mines Regulations, if applicable, though less likely for NLCIL): This is critical. Focus on regulations pertaining to:
iii. Duties and Responsibilities: Specific duties of Mining Sirdars, Overmen, Shotfirers, and other competent persons. Appointment and qualifications.
iv. Mine Workings: Inspection of workings, roadways, faces. Ensuring safety of roof, sides, and benches. Fencing of openings and dangerous areas. Clearance of dust.
v. Ventilation: Standards of ventilation, measurement of air quantity, detection of gases, role of ventilation devices (stoppings, doors, regulators), precautions against inflammable and noxious gases. Understanding Flame Safety Lamps and other gas detectors.

ix. Mine Gases, Dust, Fire & Inundation: Properties, detection, and dangers of mine gases (CH4, CO, CO2, H2S, NOx, O2 deficiency). Control of coal dust. Causes, prevention, detection, and dealing with mine fires and spontaneous heating. Dangers from surface water and underground water bodies; precautions against inundation.
x. Mine Rescue: Basic understanding of Mine Rescue Rules, types of rescue apparatus (briefly), role during emergencies.
xi. Machinery: Basic safety aspects of mining machinery relevant to Sirdar’s inspection duties (guards, operational safety).

2. Mining Methods & Operations (Practical Aspects):
Opencast Mining (Likely NLCIL focus):
i. Bench formation, parameters (height, width, slope), and stability.
ii. Methods of excavation (Shovels, Draglines, Bucket Wheel Excavators – basic identification and associated safety).
iii. Operation of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) – safety aspects during operation and movement.
iv. Haul road design and maintenance aspects relevant to safety.
v. Dump management and stability (basic concepts).
vi. Drilling and blasting patterns in opencast mines.
Underground Mining (General Concepts, less likely primary focus for NLCIL unless specified):
i. Basic understanding of Bord and Pillar / Longwall methods (if relevant).
ii. Development and Depillaring operations.
iii. Face machinery like SDLs, LHDs (basic identification and safety).

iv. Mine Fires & Spontaneous Heating: Causes, detection signs, preventive measures, methods of dealing with fires (sealing off, fire fighting equipment).
v. Coal Dust: Formation, dangers (explosions, health), methods of sampling, and control (stone dusting, water spraying).
vi. Mine Explosions: Causes (firedamp, coal dust), prevention.
vii. Mine Illumination: Standards of lighting in different parts of the mine.
4. Mine Supports (Strata Control):
i. Geology Basics: Understanding of common rock types, geological disturbances (faults, folds, slips, dykes) and their impact on strata stability.
ii. Types of Supports: Timber props, cogs, steel props, arches, roof bolts – their application, advantages, disadvantages.
iii. Support Practices: Systematic supporting, inspection of supports, withdrawal of supports, dealing with roof/side falls.
